Arifa Rahman is Co-Investigator of the English as a School Subject project, and leads the research in Bangladesh. Arifa is an established academic with many years of experience as an English language teacher, teacher educator, curriculum developer, materials writer and language assessor. She has researched widely into classroom teaching, teacher attitudes and beliefs, inequities in language policy and planning, context and culture in low resource settings and professional development through teachers’ associations. She is interested in the role of agency and social responsibility among educators. She has a wide range of publications in reputable journals and several invited book chapters in international publications.

Arifa has worked on a number of educational projects, including the largest DFID-funded project English in Action, as well as the BBC Media Action Assessment studies. She has also been part of a GOB-DFID ELTIP (English Language Teaching Improvement Project) in Bangladesh, developing English teaching materials and training teachers. Recently she has worked with the British Council and UNICEF, preparing English language educational materials for the displaced Rohingya refugee children confined in refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar. Her projects and research experience are highly relevant to the current project in informing the preparation of materials appropriate to low resource contexts as well as in carrying out larger-scale research in such environments.
